Dorothy

Inspired by Hollywood icon Judy Garland, ‘Dorothy’ is Rivans’s first Pin-up on black paper: a touch that feels both sultry and sorrowful. Black and white meets technicolour, as silver-screen Judy peeps out from beneath her exuberant headdress. Amongst garlands of flowers, fruit, and foliage, other types of Garland symbolism can be seen: Renaissance babies signify Judy as a child star; vintage cameras allude to a life lived under the shuttered eye of the paparazzi; and a silver ring represents her five fated marriages. Rivans’s print captures the tragedy of Garland’s life, but with its Renaissance cut-outs and glimpses beyond the rainbow, it also reminds us that Judy lives on - in her films, in her music, and in contemporary visual art.
